On July 16, Greensburg-based
Westmoreland Community Action (WCA) broke ground on the model home in its Jeannette redevelopment site. The project will bring 25 new single-family homes to Jeannette’s 6th St. corridor.
Priced at $90,000, the 1,500-square-foot model, which is located at 304 Bullet St., features three bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms and a rear parking pad. “We’re applying historical embellishments to reflect the site’s history. The brick facades and front porches will resemble what was there,” says Jack Brown, with WCA. “Jeannette is one of the best communities to work in. They’re so involved and approachable. City Council has been very supportive.”
As part of WCA’s ongoing revitalization of a distressed area of Jeannette, the
PHFA funded project will feature a mix of low- to moderate-income housing, as well as six market-rate homes. The project’s first six homes will be under way by the end of August. Strattanville-based
New Era Building Systems is constructing the Energy Star-rated homes.
In Monessen, WCA is constructing 10 single-family homes along 6th and Reed Sts. “The city added a cul de sac and alley—it’s working out well,” adds Brown. The 1,300-square-foot homes include three bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms and front porches. Five homes have been completed and two are under agreement. The affordable homes are priced at $90,000 and are available to buyers at or below 80% of the median income.
The WCA’s housing initiatives, which also include property rehabs and new rental units, have attracted many families and single mothers from the area. In August, Westmoreland County will launch a new online resource to help buyers purchase and learn about affordable housing opportunities.
